Abaknons Complete Five-Day Cultural Mapping Training in Capul, Northern Samar to Preserve Heritage

Eight dedicated Abaknons have successfully completed the five-day Cultural Mapping Training organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) from October 3-7, 2024, at the Local Youth Development Council (LYDC) Building in Capul, Northern Samar. Led by renowned historian Dr. Rolando Borrinaga and Ms. Athena Vitor, the training was designed to be hands-on and participatory. Over the course of five days, participants engaged in fieldwork, gathering data on Capul's Natural Heritage, Built Heritage, Intangible Heritage, Tangible Movable Heritage, Significant Personalities, and Cultural Institutions.

During the training, teachers, under the leadership of District Supervisor Anecita B. Marzol, volunteered to assist the mappers, proud to contribute to preserving the province’s rich cultural heritage. Dr. Borrinaga also visited some of Capul's historic sites, offering deeper insights into the town’s cultural history.

Present during the 5-day training were Provincial Tourism Office Staff Librado Flores, Rhussel Adriatico, and Tiburcio Cardenas III, along with Capul’s Municipal Tourism Officer, Ms. Faith Jirah Rebong, who coordinated the cultural mapping efforts.

With the training complete, the Abaknon mappers will now proceed to the data-gathering phase, marking the next step in their mission to preserve Capul’s cultural legacy. This initiative is fully supported by Governor Edwin Marino C. Ongchuan, Mayor Isidro Bandal, and all LGU officials, with strong backing from both the Provincial and Municipal Tourism Offices.
