The Residencia de Catbalogan in the Context of Fr. Francisco Ignacio Alcina's | Manuelito S. Uy


DID YOU KNOW that pioneering Spanish Jesuit missionary and historian, Fr. Francisco Ignacio Alcina spent most of his missionary life in Samar Island? He was assigned in various parishes including the historic town of Palapag, before spending several years in Catbalogan Watch Mr. Manuelito S. Uy of Catbalogan National Comprehensive High School and member of the Philippine National Historical Society talks on the life of Fr. Alcina while in Samar where he completed writing his monumental 3-volume Historia de las Islas e Indios de Bisayas 1668, a book accounting the ancient customs, traditions, beliefs, poems, ballads, songs and epics of the Bisayan Samarenos. 

Fr. Alcina's documentation on the17th century Visayas formed one of the most substantive source for the Philippine pre-colonial and early colonial history and culture.  Fr. Alcina served as rector of Catbalogan Residencia from 1653 to 1656. Years after, he went to Manila when he became ill then travelled back to Catbalogan in 1666 to once again serve the city.
