THE SOURCE || Ateneo medical intern, Yeoj Novehm Luces, shares insights on his work immersion in Northern Samar, finding the Kauswagan Caravan inspiring, the resourcefulness of health professionals, and the overall resiliency of the Nortehanons

“Sa four-week rotation ko sa Northern Samar, inexpect ko na maiikot ko yung province. Hindi naman ako nadisappoint kasi nakaattend ako ng Provincial Health Board Meeting kung saan na-meet ko si Governor Ongchuan, Provincial and Municipal Health Officers, Provincial DOH officer, and other health people. After that, nakapunta ako sa San Antonio for the Kauswagan Caravan. It was a good experience na mameet yung mga taga San Antonio and kung pano ginagawa ni Governor yung Kauswagan Caravan. Then, 1 week ako nadeploy sa Palapag RHU. For my second week, dinala ako sa Laoang for GB Tan District Hospital experience. And for my fourth week, sa Gamay naman ako. Halos masaulo ko na lahat ng towns dito sa Northern Samar kasi halos naikot ko lahat… In general sense, sobrang nag enjoy ako. Namulat yung mata ko how different the setting here in Northern Samar is than in Metro Manila. Ibang klase, bilib ako sa resiliency ng mga tao dito, ng mga nagwowork dito. Lalo na yung pagiging mapamaraan nila kung pano gagawin ang mga bagay bagay. I am happy na dito ko napiling mag elective for internship.” - Yeoj Novehm Luces

His first time in Northern Samar, Yeoj expressed how he enjoyed his 4-week immersion in the province, where his expectations were met having gained a great deal of practical learnings from his exposure in hospitals and rural health care settings. He was particularly amazed with the Kauswagan Caravan which served the San Antoniohanons through check-up, medicines, and referrals. He commended the Provincial Government for such initiative, and admired the resiliency of Nortehanons which he witnessed first-hand during his internship.

Luces is one of the few medical students who were chosen out of the 90 medical students who signed in to have their internship in Northern Samar. The internship program is in line with the continued partnership of the Provincial Government and the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH) aimed to expand health human resources and increase people’s access to health services by allowing ASMPH’s faculty, alumni and medical students to serve Nortehanons in government health facilities in Northern Samar.
