Provincial Government gives AAACU delegates a glimpse of Northern Samar's culture and its agriculture initiatives

Governor Harris Ongchuan, hosting a welcome dinner for the Asian Association of Agricultural Colleges and Universities (AAACU) student-delegates and executive secretariat, warmly received the group, inviting them to include a visit to the Provincial Government-owned Libas Estate Multiplier Farm where they can check out farming practices in the province.

The AAACU, composed of agricultural schools in Southeast and East Asia, including tertiary schools across the different regions in the Philippines, are in Northern Samar for a 2-week Summer Enrichment Program designed to expose students to various practices in agriculture and learn from the experience of each participating institution, with the prestigious University of the Philippines Los Banos College of Agriculture and Food Science serving as Executive Secretariat.

Dr. Filma Calalo from UPLB, head of the AAACU delegation, introduced the visiting guests to Governor Ongchuan who was glad that Northern Samar has been chosen as a site for the Enrichment Program.

Provincial Agriculturist Dr. Jose Luis Acompanado briefly presented to the group the Libas Estate Multiplier Farm, a 42-hectare farmland in Pambujan which is currently being transformed into a Demonstration Farm for integrated farming. He shared the ongoing Fish-Duck-Coconut Farming Project wherein resource utilization is maximized by coordinating poultry production, fish farming, and coconut farming aimed to enhance agricultural productivity. The concept, according to Dr. Acompanado, is inspired from the farming practices in Thailand—a member country of the AAACU. Other AAACU members include agricultural schools from Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and of course the Philippines.

To further introduce Northern Samar to the guests who were mainly first-timers in the province, the Governor gifted each with some local delicacies and the maiden issue of the Ibabao magazine which encapsulates Northern Samar’s rich cultural heritage, development milestones and natural attractions. A pair of UEP students also graced the affair with a kuratsa number, exhibiting the vibrant local spirit through Northern Samar's traditional dance.

The night was capped with light moments where the visiting students also gave a glimpse of their respective cultures through a mix of local and foreign songs and dance performances.
