To provide solutions to the pressing issues on waste management, the Provincial Government under the leadership of Governor Edwin Ongchuan, discussed with local chief executives environmental-friendly waste management strategies that can mitigate environmental impact.
Through the Provincial Solid Waste Management Board, Governor Ongchuan provided a forum for LCEs to look into available waste collection systems, recycling, composting programs, and waste-to-energy technologies that may be adapted in their respective areas.
In the PSWMB last quarter meeting, MetroWaste Solid Waste Management Corporation was allowed to present their waste management system which offers door-to-door household waste collection; hauling and pickup; sanitary landfill (SLF) development and rehabilitation, sorting, composting facility development and management. MetroWaste caters to the waste management needs of Catbalogan City and many other urban areas in the country.
With the growing volume of residual waste and the need for sanitary landfills that comply with environmental standards, municipal mayors including Mayor Maria Ana Abalon of San Roque and Mayor Edito Saludaga of Lavezares expressed interest in establishing their own sanitary landfill, requesting a quick site visit and assessment of possible SLF areas in their municipalities. Currently, only Catarman maintains a sanitary landfill in Northern Samar
In view of the costs entailed in the establishment of an SLF, Governor Ongchuan floated the idea of clustering of municipalities and a PPP scheme for its development and maintenance.
The Provincial Government intends to help address environmental challenges in the province by encouraging municipalities to consider adaptive, innovative and systematic waste collection and management systems.
