Strengthening Northern Samar's Agri-Fishery Sector through the Province-led Agriculture and Fisheries Extension Center

The Provincial Government of Northern Samar through the Provincial Agricultural Office (PAO), in partnership with the Department of Agriculture - RO VIII, conducted an orientation on strengthening the Agriculture and Fisheries Extension System (PAFES) in the province, held on December 13, 2023 at the Ibabao Hall of the Provincial Capitol, Catarman.

The orientation centered on the Agriculture and Fisheries Extension System or PAFES of the Provincial Government, a strategic approach aimed to create a strong and sustained partnerships with LGUs, private, farmers and fisheries groups, and other national government agencies to improve the agri-fishery sector in Northern Samar. The system seeks to help local farmers by improving rural livelihood through integrating science-based programs and services to the communities.

The Provincial Government implement PAFES programs through the Provincial Agriculture and Fisheries Extension Center (PAFEC) located in Barangay Galutan, Catarman, Northern Samar, which helps local farmers widen their knowledge and skills by undergoing various trainings where they can get relevant information about agri-fishery farming.

Highlighted also during the orientation was the Collaborative Provincial Agriculture and Fishery Extension Program (CPAFEP) draft manuscript for year 2026-2028, a program under PAFES which likewise aims to improve agriculture and fisheries in the province. Included in the draft are the fourteen (14) prioritized prime commodities in the province such as rice, swine, tuna, vegetables, carabao, jackfruit, taro, corn, coconut, abaca, yam (ube), cacao, mangrove crab, and seaweeds. These commodities are the most common products that local farmers produce in Northern Samar. 

The event was graced by Mr. Romeo Delmo, Assistant FOD Chief, Mr. Paul Nigel Custodio, RAFIS Information Officer, Municipal Agriculture Officers from various LGUs, representatives from Department of Agriculture - RO VIII, and key personnel from the Provincial Agriculture Office.

In its steadfast commitment to boost the economy in the province, the Provincial Government of Northern Samar continues to implement significant initiatives that will help uplift the agri-fishery sector in Northern Samar.
