A landmark meeting between the Provincial Government of Northern Samar (PGNS) Economic Team, the Board of Investments (BOI), and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) marked significant progress on Northern Samar’s offshore wind farm project. Ground Breaking and Launching of LiDARs has been scheduled on February 2025.
The discussions centered on the Provincial Government's goal to accelerate the project’s pre-development phase to bring the offshore wind farm as swiftly as possible. Representing CIP, Mr. Jasper Manlapaz and Ms. Malene Rahbek emphasized their commitment to assessing the province’s wind resources. Plans were discussed to install LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) systems across Northern Samar’s coastal areas to collect precise wind data, which will aid in determining the optimal locations for the planned 125 wind turbines.
A key logistical requirement for the project is the establishment of a substantial port near one of the identified turbine locations, along with the installation of additional transmission lines. This port will serve as a critical storage hub for turbine components and other essential materials for this renewable energy venture.
The PGNS through the leadership of Governor Edwin C. Ongchuan has committed to assisting CIP in this endeavor, including facilitating the issuance of right-of-way certifications for CIP’s machinery and materials, as well as conducting a parcellary survey for Northern Samar. These initiatives aim to strengthen the province's electrical backbone, further supporting the project's infrastructure needs and long-term success.
Supporting Governor Ongchuan throughout this dialogue were Director Ernesto Delos Reyes, Jr. of the Investment Assistance Services of the Board of Investments; EnP. Jay Keenson Acebuche, the Officer-in-Charge of the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO); Dr. Jose Luis Acompanado, the Officer-in-Charge of the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO); Ms. Rose Ann Suan, Executive Assistant to the Governor; and Mr. Jhon Allen Berbon, the Provincial Government Department Head of the Provincial Economic Development and Investment Promotions Office (PEDIPO).
Beyond the wind farm, the discussions also delved into complementary green initiatives such as battery storage solutions and green hydrogen production. These advancements could position Northern Samar as a pioneer in renewable energy innovation in the Eastern Visayas Region, with the potential to drive substantial local and economic benefits while supporting the country’s commitment to sustainable energy.
