Strengthening Community Care thru the Northern Samar Family and Community Medicine Training Program

A boost to community health, the Provincial Government takes its Family and Community Medicine Residency Training Program (FCMRTP) to the next level, submitting for another 2-year, higher level accreditation this week.

Led by national accreditors from the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians Dr. Gary D. Galon and Dr. Anna Mitzi B. Matela, the stringent accreditation process commenced this week, facilitated by Provincial Health Office (PHO) and Northern Samar Provincial Hospital (NSPH) officials, and participated by Fam Med diplomates and trainee-doctors.

Established since 2017, the Northern Samar FCM Training Program stands as one of the pioneering LGU-led, practice-based family and community medicine residency programs in the country.

Beyond hospital-based care, the program significantly expanded the scope of medical training by strengthening preventive and community aspects of healthcare. The approach to patient care shifted from being purely curative to one that is holistic, anchored on continuity of care, community engagement, and strong coordination with Rural Health Units (RHUs), Municipal Health Officers (MHOs), and local government units. Family physicians trained under the program serve as frontliners and gatekeepers of health, managing patients across all ages, conditions, and social backgrounds, both in hospitals and in communities.

An initiative of the Provincial Government through the PHO and the NSPH, the Northern Samar FCM Residency Training Program seeks to produce competent, community-oriented family physicians. Its continued accreditation, under the administration of Governor Harris Ongchuan, underscores the program’s significant contribution to improving healthcare delivery for Nortehanons and advancing the full implementation of the Universal Health Care Law in Northern Samar.

Congratulations to the entire FCM Training Program for this milestone and for its continuing service to the province and our people! (EML/MLO/DBN)
