To consolidate updates on the effects of shear line in Northern Samar, the Provincial Government through Vice Governor Clarence Dato convened the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council this morning, December 23, 2024 at the PDRRM Operations Center, Capitol Compound, Catarman.
With a rainfall volume of 327.2mm in the last 24-hours as reported by PAG-ASA Catarman, the swelling of bodies of water and flooding in many areas were reported to the PDRRMC, to include Catubig, Las Navas, some parts of Catarman, Mondragon, Gamay and Palapag, among others.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard reported that no sea trips were suspended along the Allen-Matnog route since start of the heavy rainfall this week, with no storm signal having been raised. However, due to the peak of the travel season, traffic can be expected from increased volume of travelers as Christmas day approaches, the PCG said.
The 803rd Infantry Brigade, actively involved in road monitoring and clearing operations, updated the body of the road conditions especially in the Palapag-Mapanas-Gamay-Lapinig road, with the Simora-Palapag section particularly in Brgy. Paysud, Palapag not being passable this morning, and the flooding in Sitio Naperes, San Roque road section. He assured the Council that they are continuously monitoring road conditions for the safety of the public.
Board Member Albert Lucero asked the 803rd IB to also look into 6 road sections along the Palapag-Mapanas-Gamay road which have been reported of great risk since typhoon Kristine also brought intense rains to the province. In response, the Philippine Army assured Board Member Lucero and the Council to assess the mentioned road sections and update the body of negative impacts from the recent shear line.
Quoting PAG-ASA, Vice Governor Dato brought hope that the weather will improve in the next couple of days, with less rainfall expected until Christmas Day. He further urged member-agencies to actively monitor any eventualities and continue the necessary response efforts to mitigate the impact of shear line especially in flooded areas.
The health response cluster through the Provincial Health Office guaranteed that they have activated their operations center at PHO and has heightened preparations for flooding-related illnesses, extending to road traffic injuries and non-communicable diseases as asthma, acute stroke and acute coronary syndrome which are common during the Christmas season.
The Provincial Government, under the leadership of Governor Edwin Ongchuan, remains committed to safeguarding the public, activating the provincial disaster management operations center and coordinating the necessary response efforts for the recent shear line-induced flooding in Northern Samar.
Also present during the PDRRMC Meeting were representatives from PNP, BFP, DILG, Red Cross, Secretary to the SP, PDRRMO, other Provincial Government offices and national government agency representatives.
