THE SOURCE || Former KWF commissioner Jerry Gracio writes how he takes pride of his home province, Northern Samar and how he yearns that it continues to thrive

An outspoken, multi-awarded writer and poet, former commissioner of the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino from the town of Mondragon, Mr. Jerry Gracio, bluntly wrote of his observations on the state of affairs in his home province, Northern Samar.

In his post, Mr. Gracio acknowledged that while no administration is perfect, the leadership of Governor Edwin Ongchuan has made him proud of Northern Samar. “I’ve seen tremendous improvement in the province’s infrastructures, especially in far-flung areas. Ang mga hindi ko napupuntahan dati, napupuntahan ko na ng relatively mas mabilis.”

He also took note of the efforts to deliver basic services to remote areas, the investment promotion and aggressive tourism program that benefits the people, the culture and arts program that helps preserve the province’s rich cultural heritage.

“I guess, the success of Gov Ongchuan's admin comes from a deep appreciation of the dynamics of power and realpolitik, he understands what the people need, but he also caters to their wants. I've seen the support of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, his staff are young, dynamic and progressive, serious at addressing issues on health, education, poverty," Mr. Gracio wrote.

He also highlighted that being a politician need not deter one from implementing initiatives that will help enliven the economy, such in the case of Northern Samar. “The Governor is a traditional politician, coming from a political family, but he pushes for good governance, his visionary leadership resulted to a more vibrant economy. Sa loob ng napakaraming taon, laging nasa top ng listahan ng pinakamahirap na probinsiya ang Northern Samar. Hindi na ngayon. And this gives us hope,” he commented.

Mr. Gracio ends his post with high hopes that Northern Samar continues to thrive under the next administration. “Ang wish ko lang, magtuloy-tuloy pa rin ang mga programa sa ilalim ng bagong gobernador. Marami pang kailangan gawin, mga issues na kailangan tutukan--power outages, assistance to farmers and fisherfolks, portable water system, transport system to enable the people to move with ease, etc. But I'm hopeful, really hopeful that the efforts for good governance initiated by the Governor will continue for the Nortehanons.”
