Bearing coastal and island municipalities, Northern Samar waters surprised freediving enthusiasts and tourists with aquatic wonders in their underwater explorations in the province. "Hindi pa ko nagdadive sobrang saya ko na kasi ang ganda nung Blue Lagoon. Worth it yung pag dive kasi sobrang ganda nung dagat, untouched pa," Jose C. Jose, Jr., a Molchanovs Freediving Instructor Trainer, shares his experiences in the depths of the Blue Lagoon in Mapanas. On top of the colorful variation of fish species and bed of corals, the lagoon also possess multiple underwater caves and passages to swim through which, according to Coach Jose, tourists and freedivers in the city specifically search for in a diving site. He further added that the lagoon is unique for its enclosed structure and varying depths which makes it ideal for all types of swimmers and divers from beginner to advanced level.
Also, a freediver from Pambujan and member of Tugkad Freediving Club, Manelle Balanquit, shared her water escapades in the province highlighting her breathtaking experience swimming through a seaweed forrest in Capul which she witnessed for the first time in the duration of her diving journey. "Para kang nasa aquarium. Mataas, maganda, and kakaiba yung seaweeds," she commented. She further described the waters in San Vicente as having a very clear water visibility which is comparable to the waters of Siargao, Cebu, and Bohol.
Besides Mapanas, Capul, and San Vicente, Northern Samar offer other diving sites featuring distinct underwater sights such as Canawayon Island in Lapinig which is home to fascinating baby sharks, colonies of fish, and coral gardens as well as the collection of corals with captivating structures such as foliose corals similar to the open petals of a flower and staghorn corals resembling male deer antlers which can be found in Bani and Bangkawan Islands in Lavezares.
The existence of these highly diverse marine environments in Northern Samar is an attestation that the province not only holds attractions on the surface but also beneath its waters where locals and tourists can explore through freediving in addition to the fun activities they can enjoy in the province.
Come! Visit Northern Samar and see for yourself the gems beneath the oceans!
