Governor Ongchuan leads inauguration and turnover of new Batag Island Evacuation Center

Recognizing the need for a safe shelter during disasters, Governor Edwin Ongchuan together with Congressman Harris Christopher Ongchuan, Vice Governor Clarence Dato and DILG Provincial Director Jinky Maquelabit, led the inauguration and turnover of the newly-completed Evacuation Center in Barangay Napotiocan, Laoang, witnessed by other government officials from the Provincial Government, LGU Laoang, national government agencies and the Batag Island community, earlier today, April 22, 2024.
Brgy. Napotiocan, one of the communities in Batag Island, is often visited by typhoons because of its location, facing the Pacific Ocean. In 2015, Typhoon Nona (with international name Melor) made landfall in Batag Island, Laoang, Northern Samar, leaving extensive damage to properties and livelihood in the island's 6 barangays. During calamities, school buildings and churches serve as temporary shelter to displaced families. With the new evacuation center, the people of Napotiocan have an additional place to seek shelter during typhoons.
A project of the Provincial Government, the two-storey evacuation center which measures 171 square meters, comes with a generator set, water supply, toilets, kitchen, and other basic amenities, ready to accommodate evacuees during emergencies.
Board Member Don Abalon, Board Member Gilbert Layon, Board Member Tantan Uy and Board Member On-on Dubongco also graced the event, along with Napotiocan Punong Barangay Annabel Delmoro.
The project, with a budget of P 7.3 million pesos, reflects the Provincial Government’s commitment under the leadership of Governor Edwin Ongchuan, for infrastructure development, disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and resiliency efforts.
